Female Gas Safe engineer

Female gas engineer

There are not many of us. I get asked most weeks why that is, and I do not have a satisfying answer beyond: it is a trade that has always been overwhelmingly men, and I went and did it anyway.

What it actually changes

Nothing about the qualification. Gas Safe registration is the same standard for everyone, and you are entitled to ask to see the card before anyone touches your boiler, mine included.

What it changes is who feels comfortable opening the door. Most people do not want a stranger in their home at all, and that is especially the case for people who feel vulnerable. Perhaps that is to do with their age, gender, ethnicity or medical needs. In these instances, having a female tradesperson in their home can feel safer and more reassuring. That is not a complaint about other engineers. It is a preference, and it is a common enough one that it is worth a page saying plainly: you do not have to explain it, and it is not a problem.

If you searched for a female plumber

You have probably found the right person, with one caveat worth saying before you call. I am a heating and gas engineer, so boilers, radiators, hot water and gas work are exactly what I do, and water leaks on a heating system too. What I do not do is general plumbing: no taps, no toilets, no bathrooms. If that is what you need, you want a plumber rather than me, and I would rather tell you now than after you have waited in.

Common questions

Why do people specifically ask for a female engineer?

Most often it is about not wanting a stranger in the home at all, which is felt most by anyone who already feels vulnerable. Some people are simply more comfortable, and that is reason enough. Nobody has to justify it.

Are you qualified the same as any other Gas Safe engineer?

Yes, exactly the same. Gas Safe registration does not have a different standard by gender, and you are entitled to ask to see the card before anyone touches your boiler.

Do you only work with women?

No, I work with anyone who calls. It comes up most with people who specifically wanted a female engineer, which is what this page is for, but the work itself is the same for everyone.
